RELATIONS WITH MOZAMBIQUE

The Republic of Mozambique and the Sovereign Order of Malta formally established diplomatic relations through the signing of a Protocol, in February1997. Over the years, the relationship has been characterized by diplomatic exchanges and humanitarian cooperation, despite the absence of a formal Cooperation Agreement.

One of the main objectives of the Embassy was to act as the liaison between Order of Malta France (OMF) and the Government of Mozambique (Ministry of Health). In this framework, a significant milestone was reached uppon receipt of the dispatch of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation approving the registration and authorizing both the start of OMF’s activity and the construction of the of a Leprosy Reference Center in Anchilo, Nampula.

However, in April 2023, the Order of Malta France notified the Mozambican Ministry of Health, through an Official Letter of Disengagement from the project centre to be build in the Nampula ́s province. According to the official letter signed by the International Director, Thierry LION, “the project to be built at the Anchilo Centre, although validated by the Ministry of Health, encountered administrative problems and security instability in the region. These reasons lead the Order of Malta France to suspend indefinitely its activities in Mozambique, and in particular to withdraw from the project to build the Anchilo centre”.

Indeed, an 83-year-old Italian nun was killed in an attack in September 2023 at the mission where she lived, in the Diocese of Nacala. The rebels attacked the mission, setting fire to all the buildings. Sister Maria, a Comboni missionary, died during the ambush.

Since then, the Embassy raised and delivered donations on three occasions, namely:

January 2025: Donation of milk powder to the Nutritional Rehabilitation Center for children with malnutrition from 0-3 years old in partnership with Access Bank;

March 2023: Following the floods recorded in the District of Boane, the Embassy of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in Mozambique. gathered, with the support of Midas Mozambique and NBC Representations, more than 800 hygiene and cleaning products for donation to the victims of this storm. The products were donated in mid-March to the Repensar Environmental Education Cooperative, in the city of Matola;

February 2023: delivery of necessities to support the victims of the Boane floods. The goods were delivered to the Repensar Environmental Education Cooperative. During the occasion we made a short visit to the place. Through this initiative, the Embassy aimed to contribute to the minimization of diseases that may arised in the reception places.
